Step-by-Step Guide: Cutting 1850 x 700mm Tambour Doors to Size

This guide will help you accurately resize your new tambour door kit for a perfect fit.

Please read all steps before starting. If in doubt, contact customer support for further advice.

1. Tools & Materials Needed

  • Fine-tooth blade saw
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil/marker
  • Screwdriver
  • Sandpaper

2. Understanding Your Tambour Door

  • Standard slats: 25mm wide x 12mm thick, slotted together and taped at the back.
  • Handle section: Aluminium slat with integrated magnet, ABS cover slides on front, handle fixed in centre (3 screws through the aluminium at the back).
  • Black plugs: Located top and bottom of handle section.

3. Calculating Your Required Door Height

Important: The top and bottom tracks each sit 6mm above the mounting surface. To calculate the correct tambour door height:

  • Measure the total distance between the top and bottom surfaces where you are planning on mounting the track (ensure that the top and bottom surfaces are level and parallel to each other for the door to slide smoothly in the tracks)
  • Formula:
Door Height (mm) = Total Space (mm) - 12mm
  • Example: If your opening is 1800mm, your door should be cut to 1788mm.

4. Reducing Door Width

  • The door can be reduced by 25mm sections (each slat is 25mm in width)
  • Carefully cut the tape at the join between slats to the point the door needs to be reduced by.

  • Slide out as many slats as needed to achieve your required width.

5. Reducing Door Height (Standard slats -Not the handle slat section)

  • Mark the cut lines across the top of the slats.

  • Cut all slats together with a fine-tooth blade saw.

  • Sand the cut edges smooth.

If you are cutting the door below the tape line, then it may be best for you to remove the length of tape and replace it back onto the door around 20mm down from where the door would run in the tracks (do this once you have cut off the section of door not required)

If you plan to replace the tape entirely, we recommend looking at this supplier on Amazon for waterproof fabric tape. -

6. Modifying the Handle Section

  • Remove the black plugs from the top and bottom of the handle section.

  • Unscrew the 3 screws on the back to release the handle and ABS cover.

  • Slide the ABS cover off the aluminium slat.

  • Cut the ABS cover 5mm shorter than the main door slats at both the top and bottom. (to keep your handle in a central position)
  • Cut the aluminium slat 15-17mm shorter than the main door slats at both the top and bottom (to allow for the black plug fitting).

  • Sand all cut edges.
  • Reassemble: Slide the ABS cover back, align the screw holes, refit the handle, and secure with the 3 screws.
  • Replace the black plugs at the top and bottom.

7. Reassembly

  1. Slide the handle section back into position.
  2. Peel the tape back and reattach it to the back of the door.
  3. Ensure all slats are aligned and the tape is secure.

8. Final Checks

  • Check that the door slides smoothly in the tracks.
  • Make sure the handle is central and secure.
  • Ensure all cuts are smooth and safe to touch.

9. Quick Reference Formulas

  • Door Height (mm) = Opening Height (mm) - 12mm
  • ABS Handle Cover: Cut 5mm shorter than slats at both ends.
  • Aluminium Handle Slat: Cut 15-17mm shorter than the slats at both ends.

10. Safety Tips

  • Always wear safety gloves and eye protection when cutting.
  • Double-check all measurements before cutting.
