Tambour Horizontal door fitting guide

Easy Fitting Guide: TAMdoûr Horizontal Slide Shower Door for Campervans & RVs

Before You Start

Every installation is unique—our doors are used in a variety of campervans, RVs, and motorhomes. We don’t provide standard fitting instructions because each project is different, therefore, some DIY experience is recommended. Careful planning, especially for the track layout, is key to a successful fit. The ultimate goal of the tambour door, for the perfect installation, is that door slides seamlessly between a top and bottom track, which are completely parallel to each other.

Information about your tambour door

  • The tambour door slides on a low-friction groove inside of the track, which fits inside your shower room (fixed above and below the door).
  • Leave a small gap (0-0.5mm) inside the top track for smooth sliding.
  • We recommend using an adjustable batten to mount the top track to—you can lower it onto the door for a perfect fit.
  • An L-shaped trim is included and it has 2 possible uses. The most common use for this is as a door stop for the door to close against when the door is fitted as an inside overlap or the other use is when recessing the door within an opening, you can hide the curve of the corner with this trim to make it look neat and have a flush front finish.

Bottom Track Placement

  • Fix the bottom track to a flat surface (floor, tray, or shower base) far enough from the opening so the door doesn’t scrape the wall.
  • Use adhesive (not screws) to avoid damaging the low-friction track (adhesive not supplied).
  • Ensure that you have an upstand / water barrier in front of the bottom track to ensure that the water does not flow out into the room opposite. (The water barrier needs to be a minimum height of 15mm)
  • Once the bottom track is positioned, measure up to where the top track will go.

Top Track Tips

  • An adjustable-height batten makes fitting easier and ensures everything is level. If your ceiling is perfectly level, you can fix the track directly to it.

Planning the Slide

  • The door slides inside the opening—check that nothing (like wall fixtures) will block its path.
  • You may need to level the floor or add a batten for the top track. Remove or cover sharp edges to protect the door.

Track

  • Our flexible track (comes as standard with the kit) lets you install the door to have either a straight, around a curve, or with a 90-degree turn.
  • The required depth is your door width (you can remove slats to reduce the door  width) minus 40mm (for the handle slat). For example, if you reduce the door to 600mm wide, the door will need to slide 560mm inside, leaving the handle at the opening.

What’s in the Kit?

  • 1 x tambour door (height can be cut down or you can remove slats to reduce the width - see below instructions below on how to do this)
  • 2 x 1400mm flexible tracks—enough for a full opening.
  • Colour-matched handles.
  • Colour-matched L-shaped trim (can be used as a stop or to hide the track corner).
  • Magnetic tape for a tidy, magnetic close.

Step-by-Step Fitting

Preparation: Ensure top and bottom surface where the tracks are to be fitted is level and parallel.

  1. Step 1: Bond the bottom track in the desired shape and let it dry overnight.
  2. Step 2: Once dry, insert the door, then mark and fit the top track so it is parallel to the bottom. If using a batten, fix the top track to it for easier fitting.
  3. Step 3: Insert the door by tilting it into the tracks or, if using a batten, fit the door to the bottom track, then attach the top track and batten to the wall.
  4. Step 4: Once the door is sliding smoothly in the track, install the L-shaped plastic trim on the inside as a door stop (fix the short side to the wall using screws or adhesive). Cut the magnetic tape to the required length and attach it to the door handle magnet. Then, remove the backing from the tape and close the door against the L-shaped stop to ensure the magnets align perfectly for a secure, tidy close.
  5. Step 5: Add the rear handle to the door at the desired height (handle has sticky back tape on it.

Final Tips

  • You can remove the tape once you’re happy with the fit and clean off any residue. (We do, however, recommend keep the tape in place to prevent the slats from moving up and down independently from each other)
  • If there’s too much gap in the the top track, the door may tilt—adjust the top track for the best sliding action.
  • Taking time to get the top track perfectly level will make operation much smoother.
  • Add some silicone spray to the new top and bottom tracks to support a smooth slide.

Maintenance and Care

The tambour door is a low maintenance door and only requires minimal care / maintenance to ensure its longevity.

  • Regularly clean the bottom track to prevent residue build up.
  • Over time, you may need to replace the tape on the back of the door as it will encounter wear and tear.
  • Adjust the top batten down over time to ensure that the door is secure, as the bottom track may drop over years of use (dependant on the surface it is fitted to)
  • Wipe and clean the front and back of the door regularly with a soft cloth and a mild detergent.

If you plan to replace the tape, we recommend looking at this supplier on Amazon for waterproof fabric tape. -
